Air Fryer Salt and Pepper chips

What are Salt and Pepper Chips?

Salt and Pepper Chips are a popular Chinese takeout dish here in the UK. They consist of fried or air-fried chips tossed with a flavorful blend of salt, pepper, garlic, paprika and chilli. The chips are cooked together with a mixture of vegetables including bell peppers and onions and garnished with sliced spring onion.

What kind of frozen chips should I use for this recipe?

The best kind of chips to use in this Salt and Pepper Chips recipe are straight cut chips because the uniform shape ensures even cooking of the chips and the vegetables. The recipe cooking time below is for straight cut chips but you can use any type you prefer, just make sure to alter the air fryer cooking time as per the instructions on the packaging.

What can you serve with these salt and pepper chips?

To turn this into a Chinese takeaway feast, I recommend trying this Chicken Lo Mein recipe. It will not disappoint and it is a perfect opportunity to use up the other half of the peppers and onions used in this recipe.

How do you make the chips extra crispy?

Ensure the chips are not overcrowded in the air fryer or frying basket. Toss them with a small amount of oil. Cooking in batches if necessary can help achieve a crispier texture.

How should you store leftover Salt and Pepper chips?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 200C/400F for 5-10 minutes to restore crispiness.

Can I use homemade chips to make Salt and Pepper Chips?

Yes, you can use homemade chips. Frozen chips are already prepped and ready to use, saving you time and effort in the kitchen. Companies that produce frozen chips often have the process down to a science so when it comes to achieving the perfect crispiness. I find frozen chips to be the best option as they are typically designed to crisp up nicely when cooked.

To make your own chips when following this recipe, cut the potatoes into finger sized chips. Before mixing with the rest of the ingredients, boil the potatoes for 5 minutes and preheat the air fryer for 5 minutes at 200C/400F.

Top tips:

Use straight cut chips: Using straight cut chips in the recipe will allow for even cooking of both the chips and the vegetables. For instance,  If you choose to use fries or thick cut wedges, the vegetables could potentially be undercooked or over cooked. If you choose to use another style of chip, it may be worth adding the vegetables before or after adding the chips.

All air fryers are different: This recipe requires you to cook the chips for 15 minutes, shaking half way. However, your air fryer might need a little longer time to ensure even crispiness. Do not add the garlic and chili until the chips are cooked and crispy.

Preheat the Air Fryer: Preheating the air fryer for a few minutes before adding the chips can help them cook more evenly and get crispier.
