Tsatziki Sauce is an essential sauce for Greek Gyros
Here’s an easy Tzatziki sauce recipe for you. This tzatziki sauce is so good served with homemade pitas and Greek gyros. There are quite a lot of variations but this is one I make all the time. Feel free to experiment by adding different herbs etc.
What is tzatziki sauce?
This is a creamy Greek sauce that’s loaded with grated cucumber, garlic and often herbs and spices.
Most tzatziki sauce recipes do not include spices but I like to add paprika to mine. That’s optional. This tzatziki sauce is not only an essential ingredient for Greek gyros but it also makes a great dip that can be served with pitas or crudités as a starter.
For that matter, it’s quite similar to an Indian raita so go ahead and serve it with tandoori chicken tikka or lamb tikka. You won’t be disappointed. You might also like to serve this Greek sauce with onion bhajis, samosas or homemade poppadoms.
Working ahead
You can prepare this tzatziki sauce a couple of days ahead of serving. The flavours actually develop and it gets better.
What is the difference between an Indian raita and tzatziki?
Nothing other than the name. This is a recipe used in many cuisines because it’s really that good.
How long does tzatziki sauce last?
Your tzatziki sauce will last for at least three days, covered in the fridge. Probably longer depending on the freshness of the ingredients you used.
Can you freeze tzatziki sauce?
No! Yoghurt does not freeze well. So it’s best not to freeze it.
What else can be added to tzatziki sauce?
I have kept this recipe simple and it still tastes amazing. If you would like, you could also add dried or fresh chopped herbs.
It is quite normal to add herbs to an authentic tzatziki sauce to go ahead and add what you like to this recipe.
