What is Honey Garlic Chicken?

Although Honey Garlic Chicken doesn’t have a specific origin, it combines elements from Asian cuisine with Western adaptations. The sauce is made from a blend of honey, garlic, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and stock.

The sauce pairs best with boiled rice as it absorbs the rich, sticky glaze, allowing you to enjoy every bit of the flavorful sauce. It also works great with noodles as the sauce coats them perfectly!

How to make Honey Garlic Chicken

  • Dust the chicken with the flour – this will give the chicken a crispier exterior. Be sure to shake off any excess flour before frying.
  • Sear the chicken and then add butter, garlic, vinegar, soy sauce, honey.
  • Simmer it all until the sauce thickens to your liking. Be sure to coat the chicken with the amazing honey garlic sauce.

What is the best cut of chicken to use in this dish?

For this Honey Garlic Chicken recipe, boneless chicken thighs are often preferred because they offer a richer flavor and remain tender with the sticky sauce. However, you could also use boneless, skinless chicken breasts if you prefer chicken breasts.

Feel free to choose the option that best suits your taste and make the recipe your own.

Do you have to use chicken?

Absolutely not! You could use other proteins because the main thing about this recipe is the sauce. That amazing honey garlic chicken sauce!!

So if you would like to try something else, try this recipe but use prawns, tofu, even fish like sea bass or bream. Fry up the protein you like and coat it with the sauce. You won’t be disappointed.

Do you have to use butter in the sauce?

No but that is one of the Western elements of the dish. If you would like this to taste even more Asian, try using rapeseed, canola, peanut or sesame oil.

How long will my Honey Garlic Chicken keep in the fridge?

As I’m sure you will know, recipes like this Honey Garlic Chicken are best served hot from the pan. If you do want to store leftovers, you can though.

This chicken recipe will keep in the fridge for 3-4 days. Make sure to store the chicken in airtight containers to prevent it from drying out.

Also, if possible, store the sauce separately from the chicken. This helps maintain the chicken’s crispiness and prevents it from becoming soggy.

To reheat, just heat up your pan with a little oil and toss the leftovers around until heated through. That or use your microwave or better… and air fryer set to 200°C/400°F until heated through.

Can you freeze the Honey Garlic Chicken?

Yes, you can freeze this Honey Garlic Chicken recipe. Allow both the chicken and sauce to cool completely before freezing.

Honey Garlic Chicken can be frozen for up to 3 months. For the best texture, freeze the cooked chicken and sauce separately. This prevents the chicken from becoming soggy when reheated.

Pro Tips

  • Use Boneless Thighs for Tenderness: Use boneless chicken thighs instead of breasts. Thighs remain juicy and tender, even when cooked with the sticky sauce.
  • Cook on High Heat for Crispy Skin: Sear the chicken on high heat to develop a golden, crispy exterior.  Be sure to get the pan hot before adding the chicken to achieve the best results.
  • Let the Sauce Reduce: Simmer the sauce until it thickens and becomes glossy. This reduction process concentrates the flavors and ensures a rich, sticky coating that clings to the chicken beautifully.
